World Liver Day 2026: 'Solid Habits, Strong Liver' on 19 April

World Liver Day was observed globally on 19 April 2026, with the theme 'Solid Habits, Strong Liver'. The day is observed every year on 19 April to mark the founding of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in 1966. The 2026 campaign focuses on four daily habits — a balanced diet, regular physical activity, moderate or no alcohol, and periodic liver check-ups.

The liver is the body's second-largest organ and handles digestion, detoxification, blood-sugar regulation, hormone balance and protein synthesis. Globally, around one in three adults is now estimated to live with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), the new clinical name for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

India's liver burden is particularly heavy. Indian studies have repeatedly shown a high prevalence of fatty liver disease in urban adults and in people with type-2 diabetes. Hepatitis B and C also remain a public-health concern despite progress under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP), launched in 2018, which provides free screening and antiviral treatment in district hospitals. Universal Hepatitis-B vaccination is part of the routine immunisation schedule under the Universal Immunisation Programme.

Liver transplantation in India has also expanded over the last decade through Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisations (ROTTO) and the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO). However, demand still outstrips donation rates, and experts use World Liver Day to push for higher organ-donation registration.
