World Intellectual Property Day 2026: theme is "IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate!"
Observed on 26 April every year, World Intellectual Property Day in 2026 carries the theme "IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate!". The day spotlights how patents, trademarks, designs and copyrights drive innovation, and aspirants should know India's IP framework and recent rankings.
World Intellectual Property (IP) Day is observed every year on 26 April. It was instituted in 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a United Nations specialised agency, and the date marks the entry into force of the WIPO Convention in 1970. The 2026 theme, declared by WIPO, is "IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate!", highlighting how IP rights drive creativity, technology and branding in the global sports industry.
In India, the IP architecture rests on six main statutes: the Patents Act 1970, the Trade Marks Act 1999, the Copyright Act 1957, the Designs Act 2000, the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999, and the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Act 2001. The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) functions under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
India's National IPR Policy was notified in 2016 with the slogan "Creative India; Innovative India". Patent filings have grown sharply: India became one of the top filers globally, with domestic filings overtaking foreign filings in recent years. India is also climbing in the Global Innovation Index published by WIPO and is currently among the top 40.
For exam aspirants, the link between IP and sports is more than abstract. Cricket bats, broadcasting rights, kit designs, athlete merchandise and even stadium architecture are all forms of IP. Designs that improve protective gear and AI-driven analytics platforms used by teams are typically protected by patents and copyrights. India's Geographical Indication (GI) tags include products such as the Meerut sports goods cluster.
Exam angle: Standard prelims hooks - 26 April is World IP Day; WIPO is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland; India's National IPR Policy was launched in 2016; CGPDTM functions under DPIIT. India joined the Madrid Protocol on trademarks in 2013.
