Govt Cuts Subsidised LPG Cylinders Under Ujjwala Yojana From 9 to 4
The Centre has cut subsidised LPG refills under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana from nine to four a year, alongside a Rs 29 price hike, citing tight global gas supplies. Beneficiaries get a Rs 300 per cylinder subsidy.
The central government has reduced the number of subsidised LPG refills available under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) from nine to four cylinders a year. The change was communicated on 7 June 2026 alongside a fresh increase in domestic LPG prices, against the backdrop of tight global gas supplies linked to the West Asia conflict.
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a flagship welfare scheme that provides free LPG connections to women from poor households, with the aim of replacing polluting cooking fuels like firewood and reducing indoor air pollution. Under the scheme, beneficiaries receive a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder.
On 7 June, the price of a domestic cylinder was raised by Rs 29, taking the total increase to Rs 89 across two recent revisions. A 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi now costs about Rs 942; with the Rs 300 subsidy, eligible Ujjwala beneficiaries pay around Rs 642.
For aspirants, the key points are the objectives and design of the PMUY scheme and the way global energy prices feed through to domestic subsidy decisions — a recurring theme linking welfare policy, the external sector and the government's fiscal position.
