Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Phase-I Assembly Polls Record Historic Turnout
Tamil Nadu went to the polls in a single phase along with the first phase of West Bengal on 23 April 2026, with both states posting their highest-ever Assembly turnouts. The Election Commission reported peaceful voting across 386 constituencies and ruled out any re-poll after scrutiny.
On 23 April 2026, voters in Tamil Nadu cast their ballots for all 234 Assembly constituencies in a single phase, while neighbouring West Bengal completed Phase-I covering 152 of its 294 seats. The Election Commission of India had earlier declared 23 April a public holiday in the two states and enforced a "dry day" to keep polling smooth.
By the close of polling, Tamil Nadu had crossed 84 per cent voter turnout, breaking its earlier Assembly record, while West Bengal Phase-I touched roughly 91-92 per cent — among the highest turnouts the state has seen since Independence. The Commission noted that long queues were reported at booths in both rural and urban centres, and that Central Armed Police Forces had been deployed to over 75,000 polling stations in Tamil Nadu and 44,000 in West Bengal.
A day after polling, the Commission's scrutiny exercise concluded that no re-poll was needed in any constituency. Returning Officers carried out the document scrutiny in the presence of General Observers and over 600 candidates or their representatives. Counting for all phases will be taken up together on 4 May 2026.
Phase-II of the West Bengal election, covering the remaining 142 constituencies, is scheduled for 29 April 2026. State Legislative Assembly elections in Kerala, Assam, Puducherry and parts of West Bengal are part of the larger 2026 state-elections cycle being closely watched as a mid-term political signal.
Exam angle: Schedule and powers of the Election Commission, Article 324, Model Code of Conduct, free-and-fair elections, central forces deployment, dry-day rules, and turnout patterns are recurring polity-and-governance themes for UPSC, State PCS and SSC exams.
