The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) confirmed in late April 2026 that the government has recognised over 55,200 startups during financial year 2025-26 under the Startup India initiative. This is the highest annual figure since the initiative was launched in January 2016 and represents a 51.6% jump over the previous year.

Direct jobs created by recognised startups rose 36.1% during the year, from 3.66 lakh to 4.99 lakh. As of 31 March 2026, the total number of recognised startups in India had crossed 2.23 lakh, collectively generating more than 23.36 lakh direct jobs. Around 48% of these startups – over 1.07 lakh – have at least one woman director or partner. The five top-performing states by number of recognised startups and direct employment are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Gujarat. India remains the world's third largest startup ecosystem after the United States and China.

Government support continues through three flagship schemes: Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) and the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS). DPIIT-recognised startups also enjoy tax holidays under Section 80-IAC of the Income Tax Act and easier compliance under labour and environmental laws.

Exam angle: Memorise the launch year of Startup India (2016), the FY 2025-26 numbers (55,200 recognitions, 51.6% growth, 23.36 lakh total jobs), and the three central support schemes (FFS, SISFS, CGSS). DPIIT's parent ministry – Ministry of Commerce and Industry – is also a high-frequency MCQ fact.
