Odisha Announces Free Education From KG to Post-Graduate Level in Government Institutions

On 12 June 2026, the Odisha Chief Minister announced that education in all government schools and colleges in the state will be free of cost from kindergarten right up to the post-graduate level. The state government said the move is meant to make education truly universal and to strengthen the foundation of its youth, with a particular focus on students from economically weaker families. Officials suggested Odisha may become the first state in India to offer such a comprehensive free-education policy spanning the entire schooling and higher-education ladder.

Officials, however, did not share details of how much the free-education scheme would cost the state treasury.
