Nipah Virus Resurfaces in Kerala: What It Is and How It Is Being Contained

Kerala has reported a fresh case of Nipah virus infection, the state's first this year. A 43-year-old businessman from Feroke in Kozhikode district tested positive, the state health minister said on June 11, 2026. A preliminary test at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital pointed to the virus, and confirmation came from the National Institute of Virology in Pune. The patient is on ventilator support and is receiving treatment.

Nipah is a zoonotic virus, meaning it spreads from animals to humans. Its natural carrier is the fruit bat, also called the flying fox. The virus can pass to people through contact with infected bats or their droppings and secretions, and in some cases from person to person. In this instance, officials noted that the patient had recently cleaned a rented godown that showed signs of bat droppings, a known route of spread. Symptoms include fever, headache, cough, sore throat, vomiting and disorientation, and the infection can lead to brain inflammation. Nipah carries a high fatality rate, with deaths reported in roughly 40 to 75 percent of cases.

Kerala's health department has moved quickly using protocols built over earlier outbreaks. A contact list of 72 people has been prepared, including 58 health workers and 14 family members. Two contacts are seen as highest-risk and 13 as high-risk; high-risk contacts have been asked to enter quarantine immediately, and as of the announcement none had symptoms. Rapid response teams have checked stocks of protective kits, gloves, masks and medicines, while officials work to trace the source and confirm whether this is the first, or index, case.

Kerala has dealt with Nipah several times since the virus first emerged in the state in 2018. Including this case, the state has recorded 32 cases and 23 deaths. The year 2018 saw the most, with 19 cases and 17 deaths, followed by smaller outbreaks in later years. This experience has helped the state build a tested system of contact tracing, fever surveys and quarantine that allows a faster, calmer response with each occurrence.
