Mann Ki Baat 133rd episode: nuclear, wind energy, Census 2027 self-enumeration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation in the 133rd episode of the monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat on 26 April 2026. The address packed several current-affairs flashpoints relevant to public examinations.

On nuclear energy, the Prime Minister termed the achievement of first criticality at the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu a "historic milestone". First criticality was attained on 6 April 2026 at 8:25 pm. The PFBR uses Uranium-Plutonium Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel and marks India's formal entry into Stage II of Homi Bhabha's three-stage nuclear programme.

On renewable energy, he noted that India has crossed 56 GW of installed wind power capacity and now ranks fourth in the world, behind China, the United States and Germany. India added a record 6.05 GW of wind capacity in FY 2025-26, the highest ever in a single year, and has set a target of 100 GW of wind by 2030.

On Census 2027, the Prime Minister highlighted that for the first time, citizens will be able to self-enumerate online through a secure portal in 16 languages, 15 days before enumerators visit. On wildlife, he praised the conservation programme for the Great Indian Bustard (state bird of Rajasthan), where the population at two breeding centres in Jaisalmer has reached 82 birds and natural mating has been successfully recorded for the first time. He also extended early greetings for Buddha Purnima.
