India Power Demand Touches 240 GW Before Peak Summer; Record Year Likely
India's peak power demand has touched 240 GW in late April, with the Central Electricity Authority projecting a record 271 GW for 2026. The early heatwave and rising AC use are driving the surge.
India's electricity peak demand has already risen to nearly 240 GW in late April, weeks before the traditional summer peak, according to data from the Grid Controller of India. This is up sharply from about 215 GW at the end of March and is approaching the levels seen during peak summer last year.
The Central Electricity Authority, the apex power-sector planning body, projects peak demand to reach a record 271 GW this year. For context, the highest demand recorded so far is 250 GW on 30 May 2024, and the 2025 summer peak was 242.77 GW in June. India's installed power capacity stood at 524 GW at the end of February 2026, with 55.2 GW added during FY 2025-26.
The spike is driven by an early heatwave. The India Meteorological Department has warned of above-normal temperatures across northwest, central and parts of eastern India, with daytime highs crossing 44°C in some places. Heatwave conditions have been forecast for parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Bihar through late April.
Industrial use, office air-conditioning and rising household cooling demand are the main drivers, alongside new connections added over the past year. Sustained demand at this level will test the grid's balance between generation, transmission and reserve margins, particularly in regions facing simultaneous heat stress.
Exam angle: Power-sector questions often test the difference between installed capacity and peak met demand, the role of CEA and Grid Controller of India, and the link between climate (heatwaves) and electricity demand. Remember the 271 GW projection for 2026 and the 524 GW installed capacity figure.
