India-Nepal Ties Stable Despite 2025 Political Transition, Says Outgoing Nepalese Envoy
Nepal's outgoing Ambassador Shankar Sharma said India-Nepal ties remained unaffected by the political churn that followed the September 2025 unseating of K.P. Sharma Oli's government. Energy cooperation remains central to the relationship.
Nepal's outgoing Ambassador to India, Shankar Sharma, said on Monday that bilateral ties between India and Nepal were not affected by the months of political unrest and uncertainty in Kathmandu following the September 2025 unseating of the K.P. Sharma Oli-led government. He made the remarks ahead of the visit of India's Foreign Secretary to Kathmandu.
Mr Sharma, who has completed his tenure and is set to return to Nepal next month, identified energy cooperation as a crucial pillar of India-Nepal ties. India and Nepal have steadily expanded electricity trade in recent years, with Nepal exporting surplus hydropower to India during the monsoon and importing power during the dry season.
The statement is significant because political transitions in Kathmandu are often perceived in New Delhi as moments of strategic uncertainty, given competition for influence in the region. The envoy's reassurance — coupled with the upcoming Foreign Secretary visit — signals that working-level engagement on connectivity, hydropower, trade and people-to-people ties continues regardless of political churn.
For India, Nepal is a key neighbour under the "Neighbourhood First" policy. Open-border ties, shared cultural and religious links, and ongoing infrastructure projects such as cross-border petroleum pipelines and railway lines anchor the relationship.
Exam angle: Useful for IR / South Asia questions. Remember the September 2025 political change in Nepal, the role of energy cooperation, and the broader "Neighbourhood First" framework.
