India-Egypt 11th Joint Defence Committee meets in Cairo, charts 2026-27 cooperation plan
India and Egypt held the 11th Joint Defence Committee meeting in Cairo from 20-22 April 2026 and adopted a defence-cooperation plan for 2026-27 covering joint training, maritime security, joint exercises, and defence-industrial collaboration. The first-ever bilateral Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks were also held.
The 11th meeting of the India-Egypt Joint Defence Committee (JDC) was held in Cairo from 20-22 April 2026, with the Indian delegation led by Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), Ministry of Defence, Shri Amitabh Prasad. Outcomes were formally communicated through official channels on 23-24 April. The two sides adopted a comprehensive bilateral defence cooperation plan for 2026-27.
The plan emphasises five thrust areas: expanding structured military interactions, strengthening joint training exchanges, enhancing maritime security cooperation, increasing the scope and complexity of joint exercises, and promoting collaboration in defence production and technology. India and Egypt also held their first-ever Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks during the visit, with the Indian side highlighting the role of the Information Fusion Centre — Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in maritime domain awareness.
The Indian delegation showcased India's defence-industrial growth: domestic defence production has crossed 20 billion US dollars, and exports stand at around 4 billion US dollars, reaching over 100 countries. Egypt is a strategic partner straddling Africa and West Asia, controlling the Suez Canal, and is a growing buyer for Indian platforms.
Exam angle: India-Egypt diplomatic ties were upgraded to a Strategic Partnership during President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi's visit to India as Chief Guest of the 2023 Republic Day. Both nations are members of BRICS (Egypt was admitted in 2024). Joint exercises include Cyclone (Army) and Desert Warrior (Air Force). The IFC-IOR is hosted at Gurugram (Haryana) and is a favourite SSC/Banking GA question. Remember the figure: 20 billion US dollars in domestic defence production and 4 billion US dollars in exports.
