India and Slovakia Elevate Ties to a Comprehensive Partnership

On 15 June 2026, India and Slovakia raised their relationship to a comprehensive partnership during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava. Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993. Slovakia was the second stop on his week-long Europe visit, after which he was to travel to France for the G7 Summit outreach sessions.

The two sides concluded a range of agreements. These included a letter of intent on defence cooperation aimed at joint development and production, a memorandum on labour migration to ease the movement of professionals and skilled workers, an agreement on digital technologies focused on artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure, and a pact on quantum communication and cyber-security. They also signed agreements on higher education and research, including a tie-up between IIT Delhi and the Slovak Technical University, and announced the first-ever ICCR Chair in Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Kosice.

Both leaders agreed to set up a joint working group on counter-terrorism and a consular dialogue mechanism. They called for strong action against terrorist groups and their sponsors and stressed holding the organisers of terror acts accountable. Slovakia voiced support for reform of the United Nations and for India becoming a permanent member of an expanded Security Council. Fico also welcomed the conclusion of negotiations on the India-EU free trade agreement, noting benefits for Slovakia's automobile sector.

During the visit, Slovakia conferred its highest civilian honour, the Order of the White Double Cross (First Class), on Prime Minister Modi. This was the 33rd international award given to him by a foreign nation. Modi dedicated the honour to the friendship between the two countries and to the people of India.
