IMD Issues Three-Day Heatwave Warning for Northwest and Central India
On 25 April 2026, IMD warned of a three-day heatwave over northwest and central India, with Prayagraj recording 45.2 °C; relief from a Western Disturbance is expected from 28 April.
On 25 April 2026, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) flagged a three-day heatwave spell over parts of northwest and central India, with conditions expected to persist till 27 April before a Western Disturbance brings relief from around 28 April.
Maximum temperatures over Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi-NCR, Madhya Pradesh and parts of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh were forecast in the 42–45 °C range, with Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh recording 45.2 °C — formally qualifying as a heatwave under IMD criteria. Delhi was expected to touch 42–44 °C through the weekend before a 2–4 °C drop early next week.
IMD's heatwave criteria depend on the type of station. Over the plains, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature reaches 40 °C and is at least 4.5 °C above normal, or when the maximum touches 45 °C in absolute terms. Over hilly regions, the threshold is 30 °C with similar departures. A 'severe heatwave' uses higher departures from normal.
The advisory is significant given that 19 of the world's 20 hottest urban locations on certain April days were in India, and ground temperatures crossed 44 °C in several cities. The Ministry of Health, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and state governments routinely issue Heat Action Plans focused on hydration, work-hour modifications, cool roofs, ORS supply at public spaces, and urgent care for outdoor workers, school children and elderly residents.
Exam angle: Know IMD's heatwave thresholds (40 °C / 30 °C with 4.5 °C departure, or 45 °C absolute), the difference between heatwave and severe heatwave, NDMA's role in issuing Heat Action Plans, and the climate-change link. Useful for UPSC, SSC, banking GA and state PCS.
Key Points to Remember
- Heatwave warning issued for 25–27 April 2026 across northwest and central India
- Maximum temperatures 42–45 °C forecast; Prayagraj recorded 45.2 °C
- IMD heatwave criteria over plains: max ≥ 40 °C and 4.5 °C above normal, or ≥ 45 °C absolute
- Western Disturbance to bring 2–4 °C relief from 28 April onwards
- NDMA coordinates Heat Action Plans with states; focus on hydration, work-hour shifts and vulnerable groups
- Linked to broader climate-change-driven heat stress over South Asia
