Civil Services Day 2026 marks 18th edition with Viksit Bharat last-mile theme

India marked the 18th National Civil Services Day on 21 April 2026, the date chosen to commemorate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's 1947 address to the first batch of probationers in which he described the civil services as the steel frame of India. The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, organised the event at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

Vice President C P Radhakrishnan attended as the chief guest. The 2026 theme — 'Viksit Bharat: Citizen Centric Governance and Development at the Last Mile' — emphasised that the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision will be judged not by aggregate data but by service delivery to the most remote and disadvantaged household.

The Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Public Administration were conferred during the day-long programme. The awards recognise district-level innovation, effective implementation of priority programmes, and reform initiatives by central or state organisations. Each award carries a trophy, scroll and a cash component that must be ploughed back into improving public service delivery rather than treated as personal remuneration.

The event also featured panel sessions on themes such as data-driven governance, climate-resilient administration, and the use of artificial intelligence in citizen-facing services. Several states showcased exhibits on aspirational district transformation and last-mile service delivery.
